Yours in Sisterhood

Sex work, nuclear power, the police profession, religion, cancer, the visibility of the trans community. A wide array of subjects are discussed naturally in Irene Lusztig’s documentary Yours in Sisterhood. The common denominator for these subjects is the well-known feminist magazine Ms. This documentary consists of readers’ letters to the editor sent in the 70s.

Contemporary women around the United States read the letters aloud to the camera. The reader shares at least the same home town with the person who sent the letter, often also the same profession or the same situation in life. However, the women do not necessarily always agree with the writer – of course not! In this way, Lusztig’s documentary breaks up second and third wave feminism into a beautiful spectre of lived principles that differ from the patterns on paper.

Four of the women read their own letters aloud: One returns to a time when she built a log cabin by herself in the wilderness, another to the thoughts of her teen-self when she had just started identifying as a lesbian. The third reminisces about the reasons why she wanted to write about her life as a sex worker, and the fourth one talks about how she relates to her own body after breast cancer.
