The Waldheim Waltz

Kurt Waldheim worked as Secretary-General of the United Nations for ten years. When his past with the Nazi German SA troops was revealed in 1986, there were efforts to brush the issue off for example by saying that Waldheim was not a Nazi but his horse was. During the media scandal that tarnished Waldheim’s reputation, he said that this was nothing but a campaign to defame him and prevent him from becoming the next President of Austria. The majority of the people agreed. Waldheim became President.

Seasoned documentarian Ruth Beckermann uses a magnifying glass when she digs into a piece of untold Austrian past. Combining historical footage and material shot by the director in the 1980s, The Waldheim Waltz creates a cross-section of the reactions of international players, Austrians and Waldheim himself when his Nazi affiliation was brought to light.

Beckermann’s film is particularly topical right now when right-wing ideology has gained a strong foothold in Austrian government. History often has a habit of sneaking up and repeating itself in the present.
