Doomed Beauty

Helena Třeštíková's documentary tells the story of tragic starlet Lída Baarová, who became a star of Nazi cinema and Joseph Goebbels’ mistress.

Czech Lída Baarová (1914–2000) was one of the biggest film stars of her day, attracting the rivalling attentions of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. Baarová entered into a relationship with the latter, and she and her family paid dearly for this decision after the end of World War II.

Baarová grew up in Prague, hearing the call of Berlin and the famed UFA film studios at the age of 20. In Germany, Baarová’s star image was moulded to that of the dark exotic temptress. The romance with Goebbels and the ensuing marital crisis led to a personal intervention by Hitler. The former intermediary of Nazi propaganda became a pariah, who made a dramatic escape from Germany.

Lída Baarová’s story is captivating. Director Helena Třeštíková’s film paints a portrait of a sad figure, drinking and chain-smoking as she shares her shocking life story. Baarová claims not to have been aware of Goebbels’s heinous acts, but she also does not hide her love for him. Historic film footage and clips from Baarová’s films bring silent contrast to the film star’s tragic tale.
