Mania Akbari is an Iranian artist and filmmaker, who handles subjects like sexual identity, the position of women, marriage, body image, and body politics in her work. Deported from Iran in 2011, Akbari currently resides in London. Her style of filmmaking is autobiographical and based in the visual arts. Her film How Dare You Have Such a Rubbish Wish (2022) participates in DocPoint’s International Competition. The film takes on the male gaze in Iranian cinema before the 1979 revolution.
Akbari is against censorship and raises taboo subjects to the forefront in her films, which has made her one of the most talked about Iranian filmmakers. Her work has been screened all over the world and has won several awards. She has had retrospectives in film festivals like the BFI in London.
