Mexican-Ethiopian Jessica Beshir is a director, actor and cinematographer. She has made short documentaries, of which He Who Dances on Wood was awarded as the best international documentary short in the Edmonton Film Festival, and Hairat was presented at the Sundance, Rotterdam and Amsterdam film festivals, among others.
As part of DocPoint’s International Competition, Faya Dayi is Beshir’s first feature-length documentary. The atmospheric black-and-white film explores the societal problems and solutions brought on by chewing khat leaves. Faya Dayi is currently shortlisted for a Best Documentary Oscar nomination.
