No Kings is Brazilian Emilia Mello’s directorial debut. Living in Rio de Janeiro, Mello holds a Masters in visual arts from the University of Southern California, and has also graduated from Columbia University having studied environmental biology, among other subjects. Before No Kings, Mello had produced various films, such as the Oscar-nominated documentary Waste Land, which follows the path of recyclable materials that end up in the hands of collectors in Rio de Janeiro. Amongst DocPoint’s International Competition entries, No Kings explores the Caiçara people who live between the Atlantic and deep rainforests.
