Still into You

”I don’t think about age, I just live,” says actor-singer Ritva Oksanen. And that is how it should be, but why do we feel the need to label people according to age? Anu Kuivalainen’s Still into You shakes up these thought processes with warmth.

Ahti and Paavo found each other at forty, both having already thought that they would never find a long-term partner. Now they are living the best years of their lives at seventy. “Loving Paavo feels like it nearly fills you up,” Ahti says with such tenderness that it would make even the toughest audience member’s heart flutter.

Sirkka and Yki met each other on the better side of seventy, and after a few years of marriage, the newlyweds are filled up with the energy of new love. Oksanen, whose songs accompany the film, also reflects on her own connection to love and relationships. Included are also Risto and his spouse Pirjo, who suffers from dementia, and Raija, who remembers her late husband and carefully considers the possibility of a new relationship. Outgoing Maricci wants to have fun, and Antti, younger than her, is along for the ride.

Kuivalainen’s film is a beautiful and intimate look at the everyday lives of these people and an important reminder that we all should have the right to the kind of closeness that we want, never mind the age.
