My Grandfather’s Language
dir. Jukka Vuorela-Morottaja, Finland 2023
Inari Sámi Ulpu’s home language was Finnish. Inari Sámi was not spoken in the family after her grandfather went to an orphanage in the 1920s, where speaking his native language was forbidden. As she is becoming a mother, Ulpu begins to wonder about her culture, her linguistic identity, and the generational trauma inherited from her grandfather from a new point of view. Learning Inari Sámi and passing the language to her children seems like a challenging but empowering process, which has the power to open generational knots.

Point of View
dir. Katarzyna Miron, Finland 2024
The poetic and enigmatic film follows passionate birdwatchers in the spring. The quiet waiting and observing of birds becomes meditative, and humans seem to blend into their environment. Elsewhere, birdwatchers gather to The Battle of the Towers competition, attempting to observe as many species as possible in one day. The documentary looks at birdwatchers as beautifully and unhurriedly as its characters look at nature.

Behind the Mask
dir. Ronja Arvilommi, Finland 2023
How to choose your candidate when you get to vote for the first time? In the insightful short film, young voters tell which things affect their choice of party and candidate. The voters have been captured in their own environment, which opens possibilities for interpretation for the audience. To stay anonymous, the voters cover their faces up with masks. The anonymity enables direct and honest speech. Is understanding possible, or is confrontation imminent?

Two Kaamos’ – Two Polar Nights
dir. Maria Gullsten, Finland 2024
Two Kaamos’ – Two Polar Nights depicts collecting beautifully as a passion. From Northern Finland, Maarit has spent years collecting Elsa Montell’s ‘raanu’ tapestries. Even though for Maarit, the tapestries are full of emotion and meanings, she keeps her collection locked away in a closet. They can only momentarily be admired by others and interpreted by experts. The film asks necessary questions about yearning for beauty and meaning, the joy of owning, and our current relationship to things.
