Docpoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival

Programme

Masterclass: Anu Kuivalainen

Director Anu Kuivalainen is the 2024 recipient of DocPoint’s Aho & Soldan Lifetime Achievement Award. To celebrate the award, the festival programme features a Masterclass with Kuivalainen, as well as a selection of films from throughout her career. The event is moderated by DocPoint’s Head of Programming, Inka Achté.

Kuivalainen has had a long career in the field of Finnish documentary cinema, and she is known for her visually and emotionally powerful films. With her work, she has won the National Competition of the Tampere Film Festival twice and received a Special Jussi for her film Christmas in the Distance (1994). Kuivalainen’s newest film is the collectively made 10 Letters to the Future (2023), which was a part of DocPoint’s National Competition in the 2023 festival.

DocPoint’s programme features a double screening of the films Christmas in the Distance (1994), Kuivalainen’s widely successful student film on her first meeting with her father, as well as Black Cat on the Snow, about a single mom released from prison. In another screening, we present Kuivalainen’s documentaries Grandad’s Waking Dream (2003), the story of a pacifist war veteran, and Aranda (2011), about a research vessel studying the ocean. The selection opens with a screening of Kuivalainen’s new Still into You (2020), which entwines songs, poems, and different forms of love.

Tickets to the Masterclass (20 €) are on sale now! There is also a ticket package (40 €) on sale, which includes the Masterclass and all screenings of Kuivalainen’s films at the festival. Individual tickets to the screenings are also sold separately.
