Blix Not Bombs

The causes and very far-reaching repercussions of the Iraq War ignited in 2003 have been discussed in several excellent documentaries (such as Fahrenheit 9/11 and No End in Sight). In the years leading up to the conflict, the spotlight regularly sought out Hans Blix, a mild-mannered former Foreign Minister and diplomat from Sweden, who was the Executive Chairman of the UNMOVIC commission. The commission was tasked with monitoring the disarmament of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction and inspecting locations of interest. The US government, yearning revenge for the 9/11 attacks, believed this was the way to find justification for the invasion of Iraq. When evidence was not found, it was fabricated.

Director Greta Stocklassa had barely turned 8 years old when the world seemed to turn more unsafe on September 11, 2001. Now she faces Blix, 15 years in on his peaceful retirement, to hear his views on perhaps the most hectic months of his life, although heading the International Atomic Energy Agency during the Chernobyl Disaster also must have been quite a ride. Back then the target of ferocious media attention, Blix now sheds light on behind-the-scenes intrigues both in Iraq and the United States, when the fate of countless of lives might have come down to semantic differences. We learn how frustrating it must be for someone following the rules of international politics to try to talk sense into people blinded by their thirst for vengeance and war, regardless of their home continent.
