DocPicks for Tuesday: Relation of humans and environment

The 20-year-old DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will be organized online due to Covid-restrictions. The 71 films in the programme will be screened from Friday 29th Jan until Sunday 7th Feb at Festhome – and for the first time, everywhere in Finland! DocPoint’s Daily Picks will help you navigate through the possibly overwhelming programme of the festival.

The fifth festival day centers on the relation of humans and environment.

Mohamed El Aboudi’s SCHOOL OF HOPE follows a nomadic tribe striving to provide an education for their young community members during a long drought caused by climate change. You can also watch the Q&A-interview with the director!

FUTURE REMAINS is a time travel to the visions and predictions of the future cooked up by Finnish designer Henrik Wahlforss. When one listens Wahlforss’s ideas about a sustainable and environmental-friendly society it is hard to believe that his thoughts date back to the 1970-80s. Check out the Q&A-interview with the film’s director Anna-Karin Grönroos.

Director Shannon Kring’s END OF THE LINE – THE WOMEN OF STANDING ROCK is a documentary about the non-violent protest of the indigenous people of North Dakota. Plans of an oil pipeline built under the Missouri river threaten their drinking water, sacred lands and way of life.

Eliza Kubarska’s THE WALL OF SHADOWS takes the viewer to the midst of breathtaking landscapes of a sweeping mountain range. A Sherpa family must make the heartbreaking decision between tradition and much-needed money, as three Western mountaineers want their help in climbing the sacred Kumbhakarna peak.

Sundance favourite Radu Ciornicniciuci’s ACASA, MY HOME follows the Enache family who have lived as one with nature amongst the wetlands of the Bucharest delta for over twenty years. Their serene coexistence however, is shattered when the city comes knocking, declaring the land is to be renovated into a public park. There is also the Q&A-interview with the director to be seen.

DocPoint will present I AM GRETA in a collaboration with Yle. The new film follows the young environmentalist Greta Thunberg. I AM GRETA will be available on Yle Docventures and Yle Areena.
