DocPicks for Friday: Gazing at Men

DocPoint’s Daily Picks help you navigate through the possibly overwhelming programme of the festival. On Friday, we turn our gaze to men and masculinity. What kind of portrayals of men can we find in the films included in the theme?

John Webster’s new film DONNER – PRIVATE depicts the private life of Jörn Donner, who for many embodied the hegemonic masculinity of his time. The film is sold out at DocPoint, but it is available in Yle Areena.

Giedre Žickytė’s THE JUMP tells the story of a Lithuanian seaman who attempted to defect to the USA during the Cold War by leaping off a Soviet boat.

IL MIO CORPO by Michele Pennetta balances between fact and fiction; the film shows how the lives of two boys from different backgrounds intersect in the bare yet beautiful landscapes of Sicily.

THE ASSEMBLY – INTERVIEWS FROM THE MIDDLE OF EVERYTHING is an “animated fiction documentary” series by the Swedish director Malin Erixon. The film looks at what is means to be an ordinary, middle-class, white, and heterosexual man today through political and personal conversations among men themselves.
